The reference of the unbelievers to the Prophet’s revelation is obviously sarcastic (Zamakhsharī); hence my interpolation of the word “allegedly.” Although these verses relate primarily to the pagan contemporaries of the Prophet, they broadly describe the negative attitude of unbelievers of all times.
